I have a dog these days, a beautiful white, long haired being that came to me and my land mate. When the dog across the street is left home alone, she howls, and my dog, Little Girl, raises her snout and joins in with a big long sympathetic yowl…
Do you ever feel that way? Everything is hard, for you, your friends, those you live with…and you just want to howl or scream or something?
What do we do when life is difficult?
Nothing is going right, the project isn’t moving along, there’s conflict with others, you’re sick, you have grief, or you’re suffering from a total loss of motivation.
Like others, I go through these times…
Here’s my formula: • Lay down • Read a book. • Call a friend. • Walk in Nature. • Allow myself to give up, not know, not care. • Eat something soothing (ie-bad)…cookies, a chocolate bar, corn chips.
And then I wait…I just wait til something of meaning re-surfaces. Maybe I take a walk, and see a bird and know something about my life.
Maybe all a sudden the sky is luminescent and I feel grateful to be alive again.
Maybe they herd the sheep down the street and I feel joy.
When gratitude, joy, or wonder resurface, I know I’m back, and I’ll find my way forward.
What do you do when life feels hard? How do you nurture yourself? What are the signs you’re going to be OK?
Seems like these days it’s essential to have a list of your personal tools. It’s an up and down world, and yes, we’re creating our well-being from inside out but we can feel discouraged and life can be difficult, so best to be prepared.
Knowing your keys to nurturing and soothing yourself is important.
And recognizing when you've made it to the other side is paramount. Take some time and write your list. Picture yourself doing these things when you feel bad. Do they help? If so you're on the right track.
Moving through difficulty is part of life, doing it with a bit of grace and ease makes it easier...
